4 Tips for TMJ Pain Relief

Wondering if you have TMJ? TMJ are the temporomandibular joints and muscles located on each side of the jaw. These joints and muscles allow your mouth to work properly, allowing you to chew, talk and swallow without issue. When you experience problems with your temporomandibular joints, that not only can interfere with your ability to open and close your mouth properly, but it can also lead to experiencing various levels of pain. You will first need to be diagnosed with this fairly common disorder before treatment can be applied.

Common causes of treatment for TMJ

Want to understand a little bit more about TMJ? There are a few different reasons you might be experiencing problems with your temporomandibular joints. Common reasons include receiving some type of injury, having a bad bite, improper jaw alignment, participating in bruxism and being diagnosed with arthritis. TMJ treatment options will depend on the severity of the TMJ disorder and include eating softer foods, practicing relaxation techniques, performing jaw-strengthening exercises and wearing a night guard while sleeping.

According to the American Dental Association, a dentist may recommend fixing an uneven bite by adjusting or reshaping a few teeth.

Four tips for TMJ pain relief

The following is a list of four great tips that can help anyone diagnosed with TMJ find the pain relief they are looking for.

#1. Apply a cold or hot compress to the painful area

When sharp pain is felt for 10 to 15 minutes every two hours or so, applying a cold compress to the area can help dull the pain. Applying a hot compress for up to 20 minutes to areas that are emitting dull pain can help increase blood circulation and in turn, relax the jaw muscles.

#2. Minerals

When combined, calcium and magnesium are two minerals that support muscle relaxation.

#3. Gentle massage

Gently massaging the painful jaw area can help relax tight muscles and can be performed throughout the day. Gently massaging the neck muscles is also recommended, as this can help reduce overall tension.

#4. Make wise food choices

Avoiding hard, crunchy and chewy foods prevents the jaw from being overworked. Instead, choosing softer foods is recommended. Also, avoid consuming caffeine, as this can lead to tension in the muscles.
