Wisdom Tooth Extraction and Why It Is Necessary

Wondering if a wisdom tooth extraction is a dental procedure you need to undergo? Most people tend to experience their wisdom teeth growing in between the ages of 17 and 24. Most will know that their wisdom teeth are coming in during their latest dental check-up appointment. This is another reason why regular dental check-ups are so important. Others will start to experience some tenderness, swelling, discomfort and/or pain as their wisdom teeth begin to erupt.

Do wisdom teeth always need to be extracted?

Learning more about wisdom tooth extraction allows you to understand more about whether or not your wisdom teeth need to be extracted from your mouth. According to the American Dental Association, wisdom teeth can lead to problems if there is not enough space for them to surface or they come through in the wrong position. This means if your wisdom teeth are growing in and not causing any problems, then they can remain in your mouth.

Even if they are not causing problems, the choice to have them removed is still available.

Why wisdom tooth extraction is necessary

The following is a list of reasons why extracting wisdom teeth is necessary for one’s good overall oral health.

There is not enough room in the mouth

When there is not enough room in the mouth to accommodate wisdom teeth, extraction is necessary. If the wisdom teeth are allowed to grow in when there is not a sufficient amount of room to support them, then they will cause the rest of the teeth to start moving and shifting out of their proper positions.

They are not growing in correctly

When wisdom teeth are not growing in correctly, they create places in the mouth where food can become trapped. When food is trapped in the mouth, it is much harder to remove. It is only a matter of time before this trapped food will begin to cause cavities due to the buildup of bacteria.

They become impacted

When there is not enough room in the mouth to accommodate this third set of molars, they can become impacted. That means the teeth are growing in in abnormal positions. They may only partially grow in or grow in sideways, which is a dental problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Impacted teeth can lead to pain, additional tooth damage and even a mouth infection. This makes it necessary to extract them to support one’s oral health.

Do your wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

Is wisdom tooth extraction in your near future? If your wisdom teeth are growing in starting to cause problems, then they will need to be removed so they do not interfere with the health of the rest of your teeth. Understand that you will not feel anything during the procedure due to your anesthesia choice. You will need to closely follow your aftercare instructions so you can experience a successful healing.
